British Film Institute Partners With Animation Studio Laika For Stop Motion Film Screening Ser

The British Film Institute has partnered with film animation studio Laika to start its event series Stop Motion: Celebrating Hand-Crafted Animation On The Big Screen, which will offer free screenings for children under 16 and include Laika’s five films to date: “Coraline” (2009), “Paranorman” (2012), “The Boxtrolls” (2014), “Kubo and the Two Strings” (2016) and “Missing Link” (2019), all of which were nominated for the Academy Award for outstanding animated feature.

The season, curated by BFI Southbank Lead Programmer Justin Johnson, will take place from Aug. 1 through Oct. 9. Additional titles playing on the big screen throughout the season will include “King Kong” (1933), “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963), “Chicken Run” (2001), “Corpse Bride” (2005), “Coraline” (2009), “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009) and “Anomalisa” (2015).

A free exhibition at BFI Southbank, Laika: Frame x Frame, will also run and showcase the art, science and innovation of the studio’s films. The exhibition will allow visitors an exclusive look at puppets, sets and artifacts from the studio’s vast production archives, along with a sneak peek at Laika’s sixth feature “Wildwood” (2025). It will run from Aug. 12 through Oct. 1.

Special guests in venue set to include filmmakers Henry Selick (“Coraline”), Chris Butler and Sam Fell (“Paranorman”), Guillermo del Toro (“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio”), Peter Lord (“Chicken Run”), The Brothers Quay (“Street of Crocodiles”), Suzie Templeton (“Peter and the Wolf”), Barry Purves (“Achilles”), Osbert Parker (“Clothes”) and more.

Tribeca Festival Adds 11 Feature Films to This Year’s Lineup

The 2024 Tribeca Festival has added 11 new feature films, including eight world premieres. In addition, after the fest wraps, Tribeca will host the New York premiere of “A Quiet Place: Day One on June 26,” in partnership with Paramount Pictures in IMAX.

The annual festival, founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2001 celebrates its 23rd year from June 5 to 16 in N.Y. New titles announced include “Dust to Dust,” “Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes,” “Federer: Twelve Final Days,” “Missing from Fire Trail Road,” “Power of the Dream,” “Soldiers of Song,” “Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go,” “Nuked,” “La Cocina,” “The Freshly Cut Grass” and “Come Closer.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring the premiere of ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ home to New York— and on the biggest screen in New York City,” said Cara Cusumano, Tribeca Film Festival director and SVP of programming. “We can’t think of a more perfect way to close out our programming this June than with some big screen thrills and a film that celebrates the magic of the shared theatrical experience.”

Academy Museum’s Summer Programming to Include L.A. Neighborhoods Series

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has unveiled its programming for summer 2024, which includes public events, education programs and four new limited film series. Special guests for the summer season include Gregg Araki, Julie Benz, Lawrence Carter-Long, Peaches Christ, Rebecca Gayheart, Judy Greer, Ricki Lake and more.

Along with the Weekend Short Cuts and Summer Spotlight screenings, the Academy Museum will launch the Summer in the City: Los Angeles, Block by Block film series, which includes 30 films celebrating dozens of neighborhoods around the Southland. The series debuts June 1 with “Boogie Nights” in 70mm and ends Aug. 31 with “Escape from L.A” in 4K.

The other limited series include Full of Pleasure: The Beginnings of New Queer Cinema, which kicks off June 15 with “Go Fish” in 4K, Damas de la Pantalla: The Women of Mexico’s Época de Oro, which begins June 28 with “María Candelaria” and Tellers of Tales: The Films of Powell & Pressburger, which starts July 18 with “Black Narcissus” in 35 mm.

Summer Spotlight films include the restoration of “Gilda” in 4k on June 13, “The Thief and the Cobbler: A Moment in Time” on June 16, “Perks of Being a Wallflower” from the museum’s Teen Council on June 29, a 25th anniversary screening of “Jawbreaker” and a screening of Cassandra Peterson’s personal 35mm print of “Elvira: Mistress of the Dark” on July 19.
